PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I am honoured to be your president for the 2022-2023 term. Over the last several years, the Association has come so far under the leadership of our past presidents, leaving some big shoes to fill.

Some of my goals as the new president is focusing on Ontario’s housing issues and doing what I can to ensure that Durham’s housing goal to create more affordable housing is achieved. With the bills that the province has recently passed, the Durham Region Home Builders’ Association is committed to working with municipalities to ensure that homes can be built in a timely fashion, creating beautiful new neighbourhoods in our community.

With my renovation background I also plan to focus with the needs and concerns of our RenoMark members. I am so grateful that we have active and engaged committees that work hard to advocate for our builder and developer members and put on incredible events for our entire membership to enjoy. Because I am confident that these core services are in great hands, I want to take this opportunity to see how the Association can better serve our renovator members.

As many of us have seen throughout the pandemic, home renovations have been on a major incline, and licensed and unlicensed contractors have been as well – with many not carrying the right insurance, pulling permits or building to code. These unlicensed contractors not only hurt the reputation of renovators in general, but they are hurting the consumer by providing poor quality services, leaving jobs unfinished or disappearing with deposits. I think that we can do better to encourage the public to always use a qualified RenoMark member when renovating their home, and that the Association can do better at providing the education and advocacy that renovators need and deserve.

As a first step, I have created a Renovators Committee, and will be seeking input from our renovator members on how we can improve. Going forward, this committee will also discuss issues that are facing the renovation industry and coming up with ideas and solutions to help us all move forward in a positive way.

As always, our best work comes with the help of volunteers – members of our Association who generously share their time, expertise and knowledge to help us effectively work with the Municipalities and the Region to develop policies that promote building in Durham Region. If you are interested in helping in any one of our committees, please contact Stacey at s.hawkins@drhba.com.

We have a busy year ahead of us and I am looking forward to working with the board, our committees and engaging with our members during my term as president.
