Why do you want to join DRHBA's board of directors?

Having been on the board of directors for the last two years, I have developed a strong understanding of the association’s role within the development and housing industry.  I would like to continue on the board to further monitor municipality’s decisions to ensure that progress is being made to improve the home building environment and further promote the home building industry as the key economic driver within the Durham Region.

Representing many local builders and development corporations, I would use my position on the board of directors to best represent the interests of the developers, builders and the housing industry as a whole.

What do you bring to the board?

Working on many different land development project throughout the Durham Region has allowed me to gain knowledge of each municipalities and conservation authority’s approval processes and monitor any proposed changes to their standards. It has also made our organization experts on the costs of construction within the Durham Region to ensure that municipal budgets are being properly calculated when increasing development charges and other development related fees. On a technical level, Candevcon has many very experienced engineers and planners and we are often requested to work with municipalities to modify and improve on their existing standards on many projects that we work on.

If elected, what do you hope to accomplish during your term?

I hope to continue to work with the municipalities, develop further connections within the municipal staff, and use the knowledge and connections of the DRHBA to help guide municipalities towards decisions that will help to remove “red tape” from the approval process which would in turn provide a boost to the Durham Region housing economy as a whole.

Paul Kennedy, Cassidy & Co.

Director

Why do you want to join DRHBA's board of directors?

After being on the board for the past 2 years I have seen some new initiatives being created, broader steps for Advocacy, as well as enhanced learning events and activities. Prior to joining the board, I have attended many monthly member dinner meetings over the decades and I have noticed changes with the members, the involvement with new members and overall CHANGE. Change for the improvement of the association and its membership. I personally like to see constant progress and growth in all aspects of my career and personal life. With this great interest I want to continue with the board. I want to participate in the new changes, growth and larger challenges ahead for the Association and membership.

What do you bring to the board?

I have been in the development industry, as an Architectural Consultant, for over 35 years. It’s a realization that I can offer a wealth of experience, in my field, to the membership. There have been many changes over the years with the NBC, OBC, Energy and related regulations. There’s a lot to share, everything from zoning challenges, new housing forms and the ever challenging processes to get to approvals for new home development. In my Senior Associate role at Cassidy and Company and S and C Architects I cover many aspects of consulting. Not just design, but also mentoring and leadership. These are the qualities and skills I can bring to the board.

If elected, what do you hope to accomplish during your term?

If elected, I would like to keep engaged with the Regulations and policy that affect housing design and development. I want to continue on with committee involvement to keep current and provide the board and membership with good ideas, fresh ideas. Housing forms are changing. The way we design housing is changing, and the way we build houses is changing. I hope to keep members informed of what is current, and what the challenges will be looking ahead. Advocacy is a prime focus of our Association. I would like to offer as much as possible to keep the push on for faster more streamlined design approvals. This is one of our biggest challenges and it’s been hard work to get change at all levels of government. We need to keep constant on the hard work.

I want to support the DRHBA on initiatives that resonate and know that my experience helped DRHBA achieve results to be successful.

Bob Wood, Mr.Radon Inc.

Director

Why do you want to join DRHBA's board of directors?

It’s simple. I have always believed that ‘a rising tide lifts all boats’.  If we all work together towards a common goal of creating a climate of learning, striving for positive change and networking we can create an industry that continues to benefit all our members.  I believe in giving back – paying it forward. As a tradesperson myself and an owner of a trade contractor business, I owe a great debt to an industry that has allowed me to be successful, my many mentors in the business have taught me that to be a leader I needed to serve. My experience of serving on two other boards, (The Franklin Club 6 years)  a member owned 225 acre fishing club, and (CARST,8 years) a national professional organization has shown me that  there is always stuff to do and leaders are needed to get it done.

What do you bring to the board?

I would bring to the board my experience of being a board member, my experience of being a trade contractor and my experience of volunteering  on two working committees to develop national standards (CGSB) One of which I co-chaired, My company services much of southern Ontario and as a self-confessed Building Code wonk, I interact with code officials and municipal Building Departments across the province.

If elected, what do you hope to accomplish during your term?

If elected as a member of the board my first job would be to figure out which of the existing sectors would best benefit from my expertise and then get to work with existing board members to make a positive difference.  That said, as a young tradesman I was blessed to work under the MCAO. Their training program for contractor’s employees was pivotal in my development of understanding scheduling on a project. It is my experience that this is the hidden costs of a project that costs builders, subcontractors and eventually the homeowner thousands of dollars. We have the experienced professionals within our association that can teach these skills.  I think all sectors would benefit from this type of education.  I would like to establish or enhance some sort of ‘shared’ education program.

Peter Watson, Tranquility Home Comfort Ltd.

Director

Why do you want to join DRHBA's board of directors?

I want to join the board of directors because I want to give back to what has been the best association I have belonged to over my 30 year career.

What do you bring to the board?

I bring a commitment to attend all the board meetings and events the association has. I bring a positive can do attitude willing to help any way that I can.

If elected, what do you hope to accomplish during your term?

I hope to accomplish several things.  – greet and meet new and old members every chance I get.  As a trade, I would like to see more local trades join the association, so I would be promoting membership to other trades, suppliers, professionals and builders a like. My goal would be a minimum of 3 new members each year.

Gord McCrady, Enercare Home and Commercial Services Limited Partnership

Director

Why do you want to join DRHBA's board of directors?

The primary reason is that I want to help DRHBA achieve the goals of our members and BOD’s to ensure growth for many years to come.

I care about our industry and the challenges we are facing and want to do my part to ensure we have a healthy association.

What do you bring to the board?

By serving on the BOD’s I bring knowledge, energy, and expertise to the table through my experience of being on multiple HBA BOD’s, and Past President in Kingston & Quinte.

If elected, what do you hope to accomplish during your term?

I would like to continue the positive steps forward we took in 2018-2019 as a board, growing the association, continue the growth we have with membership,  ensure that our networking events are the correct events for our members and that they are well attended. I would like to stay on the golf committee and work with that committee to make any necessary changes to improve the experience for our members and guest.

Mellow Belarmino, Bell Canada

Director

Why do you want to join DRHBA’s Board of Directors?

I want to join the DRHBA Board of Directors because I’ve always challenged myself to enrich my knowledge and understanding through direct participation and involvement. Though I have not had much experience specifically in the builder/construction industry, I believe that this role coincides well with my current role at Bell building relationships with developers/builders across the GTA. I believe that fulfilling this role is an exciting opportunity to have impactful involvement within the Durham Region community, to better understand specific needs while providing meaningful solutions.

What do you bring to the table?

With an array of experience across media entertainment, sports, events, and most recently the new construction industry, the commonality in my professional background has always been my relationship building ability to excel in any environment. Each experience and role has strengthened my understanding of best practices, transferable to any role – I proudly bring my keen interest to learn, to get actively involved, enhance community initiatives/opportunities and exceed goals. A lot of this is accomplished through healthy networking and relationship building. Most recently, I co-created the inaugural Building with Bell: Women in Leadership event to connect leading women in the building industry, and also created a similar opportunity at my last job with the Honda Indy Toronto.

If elected, what do you hope to accomplish during your term?

By participating directly in this board, I hope to inspire positive changes - I aspire to better understand the community needs in order to provide impact contributions and healthy changes. Furthering my experience by joining the DRHBA Board also aligns well with my goals at my current job, to deepen genuine relationships within the builder community. I want to help the DRHBA continue to grow and excel.
